A Sense of Urgency – Now Is Good!

Summer is here – it is the time of year where long vacations and office closures on Fridays are becoming more commonplace, and that overarching environment makes for a more relaxed approach to work and other things like projects requiring attention at home. After all there is always tomorrow to get it done… so, sandy beach here we come!

An alternative take on the topic of summer is that it is a perfect time to get things done. Take action!

Reasons to Embrace a Sense of Urgency

Which approach should be taken? Easing back on the pedal or driving forward with urgency? A sense of urgency, when balanced with good judgment, can be a major competitive advantage in business, as well as result in high personal productivity and satisfaction. Here are some of the key reasons why:

  • Faster Decision-Making – A sense of urgency reduces delays and helps teams respond quickly to opportunities and challenges.
  • Increased Productivity – Urgency encourages people to focus on high-priority tasks and minimize procrastination.
  • Greater Accountability – Employees are more likely to take ownership of their responsibilities when deadlines matter.
  • Better Time Management – Teams prioritize important work and make more efficient use of available time.
  • Higher Employee Engagement – A shared sense of purpose and momentum can energize employees and keep them motivated.
  • Faster Problem Resolution – Issues are identified and addressed before they grow into larger, more expensive problems.
  • Encourages Innovation – Urgency often inspires creative thinking and faster implementation of new ideas.
  • Improves Adaptability – Organizations that act with urgency can adjust more effectively to changing market conditions.
  • Builds a High-Performance Culture – Teams develop habits of execution, follow-through, and delivering results.
  • Supports Continuous Improvement – A bias toward action leads to quicker feedback, learning, and refinement of processes.
  • Helps Achieve Strategic Goals – Consistent, timely execution keeps projects on schedule and supports long-term business objectives.

Utilizing Urgency Correctly

A healthy sense of urgency should not mean rushing recklessly. The most effective organizations combine urgency with thoughtful planning, clear communication, and sound decision-making. This creates a culture that is dynamic and moves quickly, while maintaining quality, safety, and long-term success.

Most organizations have a season (or seasons) each year that is knowingly challenging, hectic, and high impact with crucial deadlines. All hands on deck, and all rowing intensely in the same direction towards a defined conclusion. Urgency is obvious during those times and is required. A high-performance leader and organization maintain that level of energy throughout the year, creating remarkable results.

So, enjoy some down time. Make it a wonderful and memorable vacation. Then, get back to it with renewed energy, intensity, and a “get-it-done-today” attitude! A high-performance coach can help you be consistently focused and energized while pursuing your goals and dreams you envisioned for this year and beyond.
