Fall Recruiting Season is Here: Essential Tips for Students Navigating Career Fairs
With pumpkin spice lattes making their seasonal return, it’s not just the fall flavors that are back—college recruiting is in full swing! As students dive into the new semester, our team is eager to connect with them at twelve colleges and universities across September and October. Be sure to follow our social media channels to find out if we’ll be visiting your campus in the coming weeks.
As the Director of Talent Acquisition & Retention, I’m excited about the opportunities to engage with students and discuss their career aspirations. To help you make the most of your career fair experience, here are some key tips for preparation, attendance, and follow-up.
Preparing for the Event
1. Update Your Resume:
- Ensure your resume is current and includes your name, physical address (meaning your address when you aren’t on campus), phone number, and LinkedIn profile link.
- Highlight your work history, academic details (including GPA and major), and involvement in clubs or extracurricular activities. If applicable, mention any specific credits relevant to your field, like accounting credits.
2. Utilize Handshake:
- Most career events are managed through Handshake, where you can browse job postings, apply for positions, and connect with employers. Make sure your Handshake profile is up-to-date and reflects your resume.
3. Dress Professionally:
- Choose an outfit that aligns with professional standards—leave the slippers and pajamas for downtime. A polished appearance makes a strong first impression.
4. Research Employers:
- Identify companies you’re interested in and familiarize yourself with their mission, values, and job openings. Tailor your approach to each employer based on this research.
5. Prepare Your LinkedIn Profile:
- Ensure your LinkedIn profile is complete and up to date. Recruiters often review profiles before and after meeting you.
Attending the Event
1. Engage with Employers:
- Approach recruiters with confidence—make eye contact, offer a firm handshake, and introduce yourself with a smile. Share your resume and be ready to discuss your career goals and aspirations.
2. Ask Insightful Questions:
- Prepare thoughtful questions to ask recruiters. Avoid generic queries; instead, seek information about company culture, growth opportunities, and the specifics of the roles you’re interested in.
3. Avoid Negative Phrasing:
- Refrain from mentioning intentions like “spending a few years in public accounting and then leaving.” Focus on your enthusiasm for the role and your long-term career goals.
4. Collect Business Cards:
- After your conversation, ask for the recruiter’s business card. This will be useful for follow-up and networking.
Following Up
1. Send a Thank-You Email:
- Within 24-48 hours, send a personalized thank-you email to the recruiters you met. Attach your resume and reiterate your interest in the position or internship.
2. Apply for Positions:
- If you haven’t already, submit your application for the roles you discussed. Notify the recruiter that you’ve applied and express your eagerness to be considered.
3. Follow Up:
- If you haven’t received a response within a reasonable timeframe, follow up. Recruiters are often busy, and a polite reminder can help keep you on their radar.
Maximize Your Career Fair Experience
Whether you’re an underclassman or a senior, making the most of career fairs and networking events is crucial for launching a successful career. Building connections, showcasing your skills, and following through with recruiters can set the stage for future opportunities.
Embrace the fall recruiting season with enthusiasm and preparation, and you’ll be well on your way to achieving your career goals.
